Anna Mae Thompson

Anna Mae Thompson, 70, of Long Creek, passed away Thursday, July 5, 2018, at her home. 

Anna was born February 23, 1948, in Decatur, to Clyde and Dorothy (Bandy) Abel. She graduated from Eisenhower High School. Anna started her nursing journey at Barnes-Jewish College of Nursing, received her Bachelor’s degree from Millikin University and then her Masters in Science from the University of Illinois. Anna spent the majority of her nursing career at St. Mary’s Hospital where she worked as an educator and director.  She later worked at Decatur Memorial Hospital and ended her career working in Hospice when she retired in 2013. She was a member of Salem Baptist Church in Decatur.  Anna had many passions including word puzzles, watching baseball and spending time with her sisters.  Most of all she passionately loved cheering on her grandchildren in all of their activities.  She was truly their biggest fan.  Anna lived by the motto: Live life to the fullest, laugh all you can and love with all of your heart.  She will be missed greatly by all who knew her.

She is survived by her husband, Ronald; her three daughters, Julie (J.R.) Auton of Decatur, Jill (Eric) Friesner of Moweaqua, Jennifer (Charley) Hendricks of Decatur, and also Angie (John) Bryles of Decatur and Rob (Lindsay) Thompson of Decatur.; sixteen grandchildren, Andrew, Zachary, Nicholas, Lauren, Rachel, Brooke, Katy, Madison, Carly, Catherine, John, Jr., Jacob, Erin, Kayla, Koven and Faith; and three great-grandchildren; three sisters, Mary Jo Cowell of Decatur, Jean Shewmaker of Decatur and Janet (Jim) Monts of Cape Coral, FL. 

She was preceded in death by her parents and brother-in-law, Bill Cowell. 

Funeral services to celebrate the life of Anna Thompson will be 2 p.m. Tuesday, July 10, 2018, at Graceland/Fairlawn Funeral Home. Visitation will be from 4 to 7 p.m. Monday, July 9, 2018 at the funeral home. Burial will be in Graceland Cemetery.     I so loved Anna, she was my director @ DMH…is where we met.she was more of a friend than a boss. We had a lot of fun. Prob more than we should have at work.. we did enjoy ourselves outside of the hospital, though.. Anna I will miss running into you at Kroger or maybe even Mickey d’s, or just where ever.. you ALWAYS made me laugh…you are a beautiful person,I will miss you..     Anna was a friend since high school and she was a very special, beloved member of our class. She had a great sense of humor and had a very caring spirit towards everyone. I am deeply saddened by her loss, for her friends, but especially for her family. You were blessed to have her and we were blessed to know her.

  5. Anna & I were classmates at Johns Hill Junior High School..she was always fun & upbeat. We had many good times together – she was always a joy to be around. We met up again recently on Facebook & I enjoyed her posts of her grandkids’ activities..she was SO proud of them. I share the sorrow of your loss..my thoughts are with all of you, her family & dear friends. I’m hoping that good memories ease the pain of your loss of this sweet, fun, loving lady!

  9. No words are adequate…no trite phrases fit the occasion. Your death has left a devastating hole in your family. I know they will pull together to get through this because you raised three strong, beautiful daughters who are also raising strong, beautiful children. You passed along some remarkable genes. Go to your rest now knowing that you did an excellent job in all the best ways. I will miss knowing that you are in this world…you were one of the best things about it.

  14. I was a classmate of Anna’s at Barnes Hospital School of Nursing. I only have good and happy memories of her. Just in the last couple of years I reconnected with her thanks to FB. Her posts always made a happy place in my day. It was so obvious how much she adored her family. You are in my heart and prayers. May her memory be an everlasting blessing to all that knew and loved her. I am so sorry for your tremendous loss.

  15. I attended nursing school with Anna and recently reconnected with her on Facebook and regarding an upcoming reunion. I enjoyed seeing all her family pictures. It was clear she loved her family very much and was a wonderful mother and grandmother. My thoughts and prayers are with your family.

  18. I am so sorry for your loss. Anna lived next to me in the dorm at Barnes Nursing School for the last 21/2 years of school. She was always so bright and bubbly and full of life! I was so happy to reconnect with her on Facebook several years back. My God give you strength. My thoughts and prayers are with you!
