Donald Harned

Birth Date: October 21, 1931
Death Date: January 4, 2018

Donald James Harned, 86, previously of Decatur, died in Tampa, Florida at St. Joseph’s Hospital with his family at his side.
Funeral services will be at 11:00 a.m. Saturday, January 13, 2018 at Graceland/Fairlawn Funeral Home. Visitation will be held from 10:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. at the funeral home prior to the service. Burial will be in Graceland/Fairlawn Cemetery, Decatur. Don’s grandson, John Scheller, will be officiating.
Don was born on October 21, 1931 in Lovington, Illinois to Carl and Ada Florence (Simpson) Harned. During his work career, he worked in a canning factory, was a local truck driver, and worked as a security guard. Don married Lois Powless on April 26, 1974. She preceded him in death on May 18, 2011.
Don is survived by his brothers: Richard (Nita) Harned of Decatur and Francis Harned of Sullivan; daughters: Sharon (Eusebio Dones) Hartsfield of Tampa, Florida, Cathy (Stu) Scheller of Cincinnati, Ohio, Joan (Jack) Price of Windsor, Colorado, Barb (Leon) Bolin of Decatur, Karen Steele of Clinton, Jerri Lynn Harned, and Donna Kay Harned; son: Larry (Phyllis) Steele of Coralville, Iowa; 15 grandchildren; 57 great-grandchildren, and 7 great-great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents, his first wife Louise, his wife Lois, brothers Marvin and David, one grandson, and one great-grandson.
Don and Lois loved traveling to visit children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren in Florida, Ohio, Iowa, and Colorado. They especially loved boating and fishing. He was an avid reader, westerns being his favorite. Don also enjoyed collecting old coins and pocket knives, and he enjoyed researching his genealogy. Everyone remembers his hardy belly laugh. He would laugh so hard that it was difficult for him to speak. Don and Lois loved each other and were fiercely protective of each other. He will be greatly missed.
Although we all loved him and tried to be supportive, we are especially appreciative of the loving care that our sister Sharon and her family gave him during the last six and a half years of his life.
