Dorothy A Coutant

Dorothy Coutant, 98, of Decatur, passed away Friday, October 27, 2017, at Decatur Memorial Hospital, with her family by her side.
Dorothy was born August 26, 1919, in Decatur, to Jay M. and Helen G. (Morgan) Allen. She graduated from Millikin University, while she was there she joined Pi Beta Phi Sorority. Dorothy began her teaching career as a Home Economics Teacher. After retiring from teaching, she was the House Mother at the Pi Phi House at Millikin. She was also the Past Director of the National Pi Beta Phi Sorority. Dorothy was the very first woman on the Board of Directors at Decatur Memorial Hospital. She was the PEO Chapter CX and a Garden Club Member. Dorothy loved cooking and baking, sewing, and of course, working with flowers.
She is survived by her son, William A. (Debra) Burns; step-daughter, Frances C. Peterson; daughter-in-law, Mary Burns (Jim) Keller; six grandchildren, Brad Burns, Brian (Wittney) Burns, Konnor Burns, Katelyn Burns, Kristin (Jeff) Torrens and Dr. Erika Peterson and her husband, Tim Gariepy; seven great-grandchildren, Wesson Burns, Isaac Tipsword and Shaukana Tipsword, Sam Torrens, Kara Torrens, Jacob Gariepy, Regan Gariepy.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her first husband, F. William “Bill” Burns; her second husband, George E. Coutant; her son, Robert “Rocky” A. Burns; two brothers, Edwin G. Allen and Robert Allen; and one sister, Margaret A. Larsen.
Visitation will be from 3 p.m. to 6 p.m., Friday, November 10, 2017, at Graceland/Fairlawn Funeral Home. Funeral services will be private on Saturday. Burial will be in Fairlawn Cemetery. Memorials may be directed to Susan G. Komen 4700 N University St # 92, Peoria, IL 61614.

  2. Dorothy was a teacher in the Culinary Arts program at the Decatur Area Vocational Center when I started working at DAVC in the Child Care 1978. She was a great teacher. Dorothy was a stylish lady with much class. I always admired her as a home economist friend that I enjoyed knowing .
