Written by: Gary W Williams, BMC USN(Retired)

Even though I may not have known Ed personally, he and I have served on the U.S.S. Hammerberg DE1015 at one time, or another.
I served on HAMMERBERG as a “Training platform” when I was a lowly Seaman Apprentice during the Christmas time of 1961 to Just past New Year’s day 1962. I was a Naval Reservist at the time and this time aboard HAMMERBERG was truly an enlightening experience.
To Ed’s remaining family you have my deepest Condolences on his passing..I will say a prayer that God will show mercy upon his soul. I am hoping he was saved by the precious Blood of Jesus Christ, but in any case he has been transferred to the Staff of the Supreme Commander..

  2. Ken, and the rest of the Smith family, I am so sorry for the loss of your father, sending prayers to you all. I only met your dad a couple of times but new he was a great man. (Did not like his Cubs Logo on his Garage door tho) Rest In Peace Shipmate, Fair winds Following Seas.
