Helen G. Hamilton

Birth Date: February 17, 1940
Death Date: March 10, 2017

Decatur – Helen G. Hamilton was born at home in Minford Ohio on February 17, 1940 and departed this life as she lived, with grace and dignity. This past year she fought a heroic battle with cancer and bid farewell to this life on March 10, 2017 surrounded by loved ones.

Helen lived in Scioto County, Ohio for most of her life, raised by her parents Bonnie and Maynard Ratliff with her sisters, Ruth, Sharon and Kathy, her brothers, Ron and Delmar. She raised her children, Lisa and Rodney in Minford, Ohio and was a member of Christ’s Community Church in Portsmouth.

She moved to Decatur in 1999 where she quickly made it her home. One of her greatest passions was to use her art as God would ask, in His image and in the beauty of His Word. She was a member of the art community and active with Gallery 510 and Barn Colony. She was featured in regional magazines and newspaper articles with several gallery showings over the years. Her art work is cherished in homes far and wide, and hangs reverently in many churches and political offices.

Helen was blessed with the ability to travel the world and enjoyed many highlights. Such as climbing the Pyramids of the Moon and Sun in Mexico; touring London and the English countryside; riding camels in Egypt and exploring the Great Pyramids; walking in the footsteps of Jesus in Jerusalem; visiting the Isle of Patmos in the Mediterranean Sea; sightseeing in Rome and driving the scenic roads of Italy. She loved to read and learn about the places she visited and the religious history of each location.

She was an active member of Tabernacle Baptist Church in Decatur where she enjoyed Sunday School and many enriching sermons learning about the Word of God. Helen was especially active with the Church’s “The Gallery Experience”, a community art outreach program. The endearing friendships she made through her church and art meant so much to her.

Her friends and family mourn the passing of this talented, graceful lady. They rejoice knowing she is with our Creator.

Helen was proceeded in death by her parents, Maynard and Bonnie Ratliff. She is survived by her children, daughter Lisa Hamilton Royal and husband Steve of Decatur, Illinois; her son Rodney Hamilton and wife Vicky of Portsmouth, Ohio. Her grandchildren and great-grandchildren, Lindsey Hodge and daughter Addison; Elizabeth Royal and daughter Aurora; Jared Anderson and daughter Makaela; Chrystal Wells and twins, Olivia and Owen; Sarah and Ben Hamilton and son Dallas, and daughter Elisa. Grandson, Rodney Hamilton, Jr. and fiancé Sarah Maines; Franklin Osborne, Jr. and daughter Willow. Her three sisters, two brothers, special nieces and nephews. A multitude of cousins, some as close as sisters and brothers.

  3. Our family was so touched by the portrait that Helen did of our grandson, Dakota, when he died in an accident. It was beautiful and such a nice tribute for his parents to have. I am thankful, a!so, to have copies of several of her paintings. I think fondly of her whenever I look at them.

  4. To a wonderful, beautiful, talented woman. I feel very lucky to have known you and called you my friend. It was comforting just to know you were here. I'll miss you and I look forward to seeing you again.

  5. Like so many in our family…..WE HATE CANCER!!! But one thing cancer cannot take away from us is the memory of what a loving, wonderful, and talented lady Sis has always been. Bub and I are so sorry we will not be able to attend Sis' local memorial service. We had made previous plans for that day to be with our family in GA to celebrate a grandson's 20th BD. We will be thinking of you on Saturday, and praying God gives you peace, strength and comfort as you face the difficult days ahead. Much love to each of you.
