Born in Decatur, Illinois on January 19, 1954 to Carlos M. Lyon and Jacqueline M. Lyon, she was the oldest of six children. Jan’s passion for sports started at an early age as a member of Country Club of Decatur swim team where she established records that stood for many years. At Northwestern University, she was a standout basketball and volleyball player and a member of the Chi Omega women’s fraternity. Jan was the first female athlete honored by induction into the N Men’s Club, now called the N Club. After completing a graduate degree in Sports Administration at the Ohio State University, Jan began a career with the Amateur Athletic Union (AAU) and held multiple titles during her 35 years with the organization. At the time of her illness she was Director of Compliance for the AAU.
Books, movies, music, sports, and history were some of Jan’s greatest interests but she was most passionate about the time and memories shared with family and friends. Jan believed that Christmas was the most magical time of the year and she dearly loved her role as “lead Elf “in charge of the family’s Christmas traditions. Jan was a blessing to all but is particularly missed by her father Carlos M. Lyon, her siblings Bruce (Jennifer) Lyon, Kurt (Paula) Lyon, Laura Lyon Fuller, Craig (Dawne) Lyon, Eric Lyon and her thirteen nieces and nephews as well as many friends and colleagues. She was preceded in death by her mother Jacqueline M. Lyon and nephew Corbin Lyon.
