DECATUR- Mary Ellen (Bales) Sandage, 92, of Decatur, passed away Saturday, October 7th, 2017 at Mason Point Nursing Home in Sullivan, IL.
Mary was born August 7, 1925 in Bement, IL, the daughter of Earl J. Bales and Goldie Jane (Pierce) Bales. She married the love of her life, Earl Eugene Sandage on September 8, 1946. He passed away on December 28, 2006, after celebrating 60 blessed years together.
She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, one brother and one sister.
Surviving are her two sons: Robert D. Sandage and wife Loli of Decatur, IL, and Terry L. Sandage and wife Barbara of Machesney Park, IL; four grandchildren: Robert L. Sandage of Champaign, IL, Mary E. (Sandage) Hunt and husband William of Elgin, IL, Victoria C. Sandage of Chicago, IL, and Christopher N. Sandage of Machesney Park, IL; and three great grandchildren: Brayden W. Hunt, Davin R. Hunt and Sophia I. Hunt.
During the war, Mary worked at Crown Cork, later devoting her time as a housewife. She was a member of Lampstand Presbyterian Church, and the Order of Eastern Star, Owen Scott Chapter. Mary and Earl enjoyed traveling which included cruises, trips to Hawaii, Spain, and fishing in Minnesota and Wisconsin. She loved to quilt, cook, shop, see live performances and spend time with family. She was an amazing cook and enjoyed teaching her granddaughters her secrets in baking and cooking.
Services to celebrate Mary’s life will be held at 10 am Thursday, October 12, 2017 in the Moran & Goebel Funeral Home. Visitation will be held from 5 to 7 Wednesday evening at the funeral home. Interment will be in Graceland Cemetery. Memorials are suggested to the Sandage Family for Mary’s great grandchildren’s educational fund.
