Michael Lynn Lowe

Birth Date: January 28, 1950
Death Date: March 23, 2017

Decatur – Michael Lynn Lowe, age 67 passed away peacefully in his home surrounded by his loving family on Thursday, March 23, 2017.

Michael was born on January 28, 1950 in Decatur, Illinois to Jim and Winifred Lowe. While in high school Michael met the love of his life, Joanna who had recently moved to the United States from her native Greece. Michael took Joanna fishing on their first date and she soon learned to enjoy Michael’s favorite pastime. They were often found fishing on the bank or on the boat in the water, enjoying the great catch of the day. Michael and Joanna were married on September 7, 1969.

As a great fisherman, Michael took part in many fishing tournaments. He fished the BCA, USA & Midamerica tournaments. Michael was also a member of the Kaskaskia Valley Fishing Club & the Decatur Crappie Poppers. Together with his best friend Dwight Hudson, they started the Decatur Bass Bandits Club. While enjoying fishing the tournaments Michael was frustrated that he could not find the fishing tackle that he wanted to, his solution to this was to open a Bass Pro Shop. After 2 years, he opened his own business, Mikes Tackle World. Nine years later the business was lost due to fire. Mikes Tackle World was then re-located to its current location a few months later. His fishing tackle business is still going strong 39 years later with his wife Joanna and their children, Michael and Michelle. Michael was well respected in the fishing business both for his business sense and his knowledge of fishing. Michael also spent many years as a truck driver, and retired from Yellow Freight as a Teamster with local 279.

Michael will be deeply missed by those who loved and knew him. Countless friends have enjoyed his stories and advice about fishing and trucking throughout the years, these memories will live on forever.

Michael is preceded in death by his parents and two brothers, James and Melvin. He is survived by his loving wife, Joanna. His two children, Michael (Celia) and Michelle. His grandchildren, Alexander, Austin, Cassandra and Ladon. His brother Mitch and sister Debbie.

The family would like to thank Dr. Kairouz, Amber and the staff at Cancer Care and Stephanie and Nichol from Home Health. Their support has been deeply appreciated.

Funeral service to celebrate Michael’s life will be 10;00 AM, Monday, March 27, 2017, at Graceland/Fairlawn Funeral Home.
