Samuel Ernest Patterson, 69, of Decatur, passed away Tuesday, November 7, 2017, at his home.
Sam was born April 16, 1948, in Evansville, IN, to Horace Edward and Dora Josephine (Dunning) Patterson, Sr. He proudly served in the United States Marine Corps during the Vietnam War. He retired from Caterpillar after 30 years of service. He was an avid Nascar fan and loved spending time with his family, especially his grandson, Dillon.
He is survived by his son, Michael (Heather) Patterson of Macon, IL; one grandson, Dillon Patterson of Macon, IL; three brothers, Pat Patterson of New Braunfels, TX, Randy Shaw of Baton Rouge, LA, and J.R. Shaw of Decatur, IL; two sisters, Dorothy Newkirk of Columbus, OH and Donna (Moe) Tague of Decatur.
He was preceded in death by his parents.
A celebration of life for Sam Patterson will be held from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. Friday, November 10, 2017, at Parkway Church of the Nazarene. Burial will be in Camp Butler at a later date. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to the Macon County Honor Guard.

  1. To the family of my friend and fellow marine. The last time I saw Sam was in Chu Lai after an attack where he was wounded. We were like brother in the 60's. I know he will be greatly missed. Semper-Fi. Pal.

  3. Lots of wonderful memories for both my husband & I of Sam. I worked with sam at Caterpillar and my husband also knew him. May you rest in peace Sam and may the good lord give your family peace at this difficult time. Thank you so much Sam for your service to our country. You will never be forgotten. RIP SAM.

  4. I have known Sam for over 50 years….he will be missed at all of his hangouts. I remember when he wore his hair long, permed and road a motorcycle, back when he dated my sister Sally. He was a good friend to many and served his country proudly. May he rest in peace.
