Toomas E. Kriisa

Birth Date: September 5, 1951
Death Date: June 1, 2018

Toomas Enn Kriisa, 66, of Decatur, died June 1, 2018 at his residence.

Toomas was born September 5, 1951, in Decatur, IL, the son of Harry and Veera (Kivik) Kriisa. He married Janice Whitehead Grigg on December 26, 1988, in Decatur, IL, at the First Lutheran Church.

Toomas was a University of Illinois alum, earning a B.S. and M.S. in Physics. In 1990, he founded his own private company, Kriisa Research Inc. He was an avid sports fan rooting for all the Chicago teams and the Illini and loved watching Jeopardy, often commentating on the contestants’ poor betting strategies in the final round. He regularly went out for long walks to think about a challenging physics problem, and he was often seen pushing his son, Peeter, in a jogging stroller along the Stevens Creek trail. Toomas was always full of laughter – after spending time with him, you would feel a bit more hopeful, optimistic, and encouraged.

He was a lifelong member of First Lutheran Church where he served as a deacon, and he taught classes at Richland Community College and LSA.

Surviving are his wife, Janice; children, Gail Grigg (Dee) of Madison, WI, Ty Grigg (Laura) of Highland Park, IL, Peeter Kriisa of Decatur, IL; sisters, Mare Leo (Richard) of Rochester, NY, Tiina Kriisa-Leo (Tim) of Rochester, NY; three grandchildren, Fiona, Henry, and Samuel; nephews Erik, Mark, Brian, Kristofer, and Isak, and niece Liisa.

Memorial services will be held 11:00 AM, Thursday, June 7, 2018, at First Lutheran Church. Visitation will be from 10:00 – 10:45 AM at the church prior to service time. Condolences may be left to the family at Memorial donations may be made to Janice Kriisa for the care of their son, Peeter.

  1. Tom's laugh

    Written by: Dave Peterson

Tom and I were roommates at the University of Illinois for a couple of years. We had great times going to UI football and basketball games, working out at the gym, talking about science, and yes, going to a few parties and bars. We lost touch over the years, and another one of our roommates recently told me about Tom passing. He was a good man, and although I’m sad today, I’ll try to focus on remembering his laugh. All best wishes to your family in finding a way through the sorrow in the days ahead.

  2. Jan, I'm so sorry to here of Tom's passing. Besides being really smart and a nice guy, he was a great football player when we got together for pick up games in high school.

    Chuck Boehm

  3. Jan, I am so sorry for your loss. You and Peeter are in my thoughts and prayers. May God comfort you both during this time.

  4. It seems so unreal to have received the news about Toomas. We only met him once in 2002 – but the special person he was and the amazing family of his – have kept in touch over the last 16 years.
Toomas – your empty place is difficult to absorb – but the knowing that you are safe and happy wit Jesus – makes it bearable. May God comfort; console and carry the Kriisa family and their loved ones through this very very trying period in their lives. Our prayers are with you always – LOtsa Love – Alana; William: Gareth; Shana; Kiana and Jana Holloway(South Africa)

  5. Only met Toomas one time but I remember his smile and kindness. Jan, I am praying for you at this sad time. May God protect you and especially Peeter and give you peace. Much love from our family to yours.

  6. Jan, I was so dismayed to learn of your loss. It has been years since our lives crossed, but I remember Toomas as a gentle, creative man.. I still see the Christmas tree filled by real candles and remember his reassurance of safety. Sarah sends her sympathy from the Netherlands where she lives. Love be with you. Sherry Parriott

  7. I didn't know Toomas well but I will always remember him helping with communion at First Lutheran. His voice was so calming and loving and I know Jesus was using him to help others know Jesus was forgiving my sins. Your whole family is in my prayers.

  8. We are thinking of you and praying for your family as you grieve together. We are thankful for Toomas' life and the love he offered your family, and the way our very beloved pastor Ty was shaped by him. May the Lord cover you with grace and comfort for these sad times. From your friends at Life on the Vine Church in Long Grove, Illinois.
