James Peterson Simpson, 80, of Decatur, passed away March 30, 2022 at Paris Healthcare and Rehab in Paris, Illinois. James was born in Pawtucket, Rhode Island on September 26, 1941, the son of Evelyn Simpson. After graduating high school, he served honorably in the US Navy. He later worked as a carpenter in the construction industry, including 31 years with PPG and 13 years as a cook with the Decatur Park District. In his free time, James enjoyed watching NASCAR and tinkering with old cars as a member of several car clubs, including Fun Time Cruisers, Early Idlers Club, and Cruisin’ Roosters. James was a member of Calvary Baptist (Logos) in Decatur and the American Legion of Macon Post 22. He married Sue Knippenberg on June 6, 1969 in Cumberland, Maryland. James is survived by his wife Sue; son James P. Simpson II of Decatur; brothers Nicky, Ricky, and Teddy; and sisters Patricia and Linda. He was preceded in death by his mother Evelyn Behr and brother Bobbie. Graceland Fairlawn Funeral Home is providing cremation services for James. A memorial service will be held at 2pm on Friday, April 8 at Calvary Baptist (Logos) Church Fellowship Hall. Visitation prior to the service will begin at 1pm.
