Alvis L. Thompson's Obituary
Alvis L. Thompson, 39, for the 54th time (93) of Decatur passed away on Saturday, August 6, 2016 in Decatur Memorial Hospital.
Al was born on August 5, 1923 in Rinard, IL the son of Robert Hayward and Mildred (Dobbs) Thompson. He served his country proudly in the U.S. Navy during WWII. He was a member of First General Baptist Church, Castle William American Legion Post #105, and the UAW Local #751. He was a retired from Caterpillar Manufacturing. He enjoyed gardening, woodworking, deer hunting, and serving the Lord. He married Betty (Dawdy) Mariner on February 14, 1975 in Decatur.
Surviving are his wife, Betty; Son, Ronald A. Thompson (Anna) of Decatur; daughter, Judith K. Roberson (Lonnie) of Florida; step-sons, John Mariner, Jr. (Phyllis) of Divernon; Archie “Bill” Mariner (Stephanie) of Colorado; Joe Mariner of Decatur; step-daughters, Vicky Jarvis (Mark) of Pekin; Carol Kleister (Harold) of La Port, IN; Katherine Tilson (Gary) of Davenport, IA; sister, Betty Newby of Bloomington; 19 grandchildren, many great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren, and several nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents, and a sister Wanita Pingleton.
Funeral service to celebrate Al’s life will be 11 AM Friday, August 12, 2016 in First General Baptist Church, 2825 S. Baltimore Ave, Decatur, ILwith Pastor Randall Garrett officiating. Visitation will be 9-11 AM Friday in the church. Burial will be in Macon County Memorial Park with military rites conducted by the Macon County Honor Guard. Memorials are suggested to Land of Lincoln Honor Flight.
