Anton A. Susin's Obituary
Anton A. Susin, 94, passed away Saturday, May 26, 2012 at St. Mary’s Hospital in Decatur, IL.
Anton, known as Tony to many of his friends, was born September 26, 1917 in Kincaid, IL. He was a veteran of WWII. While serving in the US Army at Ft. Knox, he met and married Lucille (Maddox) Susin July 13, 1944 in Louisville, KY before being shipped overseas. From 1946 – 1955 he owned and operated Susin’s Market at the corner of John and Jasper Streets. In 1955 he entered the wholesale grocery business being employed by Decatur Grocer. From 1967 – 1983 he was with Chris Hoerr and Sons Co. in Peoria, IL. Retirement in 1983 allowed him to spend more time with family and friends, finding time for much golf and the Golden K Kiwanis Club service organization. He was a member of St. Patrick’s Catholic Church. His later years were spent with his Keystone Gardens Retirement friends, entertaining them with his singing and playing the spoons. He also loved Keystone outings and activities, especially Bingo.
He was preceded in death by his beloved wife Lucille in 1990, his son-in-law Wayne Peterson in 1995, his parents, sister Doris Cummings, brother Atillio Susin.
Surviving are his daughter, Barbara (Robert) Wanzel of St. Louis, MO, and son, James (Kathy) Susin of Washington, IL. He was a very proud grandfather of 5 grandchildren: Dawn (Tom) Vivirito of Schaumburg, IL; Steven (Shawna) Peterson of Boulder, CO; Amy (Robert) Campbell of Yorktown, VA; Cheryl Susin of San Francisco, CA and Laura (Steve) Koo of Chicago, IL. He also cherished his 8 great-grandchildren: Jessica, Bradley, and Grant Vivirito; Cole and Hannah Peterson; Reagan and Sarah Campbell; and Sadie Elizabeth Koo.
Funeral services will be held on Saturday, June 2, 2012 at 2 pm at Graceland/Fairlawn Funeral Home. Visitation will be from 1 pm till time of service. Burial with a “Flight Home” Ceremony will be in Graceland Cemetery. Memorials may be made to the American Heart Association or Catholic Charities.
