Betty Ellen Shelton's Obituary
Betty Ellen Shelton, age 87, went home to be with Jesus Monday night, January 20, 2014 at St. Mary’s Hospital in Decatur.
Betty was born to the late Harold and Alma Fletcher on Nov. 12, 1926, in La Grange. Betty married the late Don Shelton in 1949 in Western Springs, and they lived in Chicago before relocating to Decatur.
Betty worked for over a decade as an administrative assistant for Sunnyside School, a special education school for children with developmental disabilities. Following her retirement, she served as editor for the “Patchwork Patter,” a quarterly quilting magazine. Betty was an avid and talented quilter. She also volunteered with Don at Kumon Math and Reading Center, which was owned by her son Dirk at the time. She loved children dearly.
Betty is survived by four children: Brent (Kathy) Shelton of Rock Hill, SC; Dirk (Bev) Shelton of Decatur; Scott Shelton of Bloomington; and Sally (Scott) Torrens of Valencia, CA. She is also survived by seven grandchildren, Kaitie, Sarah, Derrick, Ramlah, Luke, David, and Emily. She will be deeply missed by her family and friends.
God has given us the promise that if we believe in Jesus Christ we will not perish, but have eternal life. Betty believed in Christ and by God’s promise she is in heaven with her husband, Don, and every one of her friends and family who also believed. Praise God!
Funeral services will be at 11:00 am Saturday, January 25, 2014 in the Moundford Free Methodist Church 1803 E. Mound Rd. Visitation will be one hour prior to the services. In lieu of flowers, Betty’s wishes were that donations be made to the Alzheimer’s Association: P.O. Box 96011, Washington, DC 20090-6011
