Bonni Hugo's Obituary
Long time resident of Decatur, IL, Bonni (Swift) Hugo, 86 (although self-proclaimed to be 21 forever), died at her home on June 8th, 2024 – surrounded by her family.
Bonni was born in Fort Wayne, Indiana on January 17th, 1938, to Bayless & Anna (Henry) Swift. Later in childhood, moving to Decatur, IL, she attended St. Thomas Grade and graduated from St. Teresa High School – class of 1956. After high school, she attended Catholic Women’s Mundelein College in Chicago, IL, before returning to Decatur, IL to work at the Chicago Motor Club – where she made many lifelong friends.
An avid busy-body, Bonni rarely sat still long. During high school, she was involved in glee club, student council, area social clubs, and served on the Library Youth Council that was responsible for developing the first Youth Reading Room at the Decatur Public Library in 1952.
In July of 1963, Bonni married Robert “Bob” Hugo of Decatur, IL and the two shared five children together. Bonni was a dedicated Mom to all five, regularly volunteering at school as Room Mother, Booster Club Officer, and more. Additionally, Bonni served as the St. James Catholic School Athletic Director in the 80’s. She continued to serve and volunteer in the sports arena, serving for over 10 years as the Umpire Coordinator for both Decatur Pony & Khoury League Baseball & Softball.
A devoted Catholic, she regularly volunteered at St. James School & Parish throughout the 70’s and 80’s teaching CCD, working bingo, Mardi Gras, and serving on the Funeral Hospitality Committee. She continued this dedicated volunteering when she joined St. Thomas Parish in Decatur in the 1990’s – where she would remain a parish member for the rest of her days.
Bonni retired from her position as a Conversion Specialist for the U.S. Government – Department of Labor & Statistics in 2008 after nearly 30 years of service. During her tenure there, she received numerous accolades for her high success rate of converting tough survey refusals into consensual survey respondents – a success easily attributed to her charming and persuasive personality.
Throughout her life, Bonni was an active and loyal friend – bowling leagues at Mt. Zion Bowl, where she also served as League Secretary for many years. She played BUNCO with her dear friends for over 50 years. And in retirement, she kept busy playing bingo, attending shows, playing cards, and attending luncheons.
Bonni was a devoted daughter, sister, wife, mother, grandmother, and friend. Her quick wit was always present and fine-tuned. Even during the most difficult situations, she was ready to serve a witty and hilarious remark sure to lift the spirits of those around her.
Bonni was especially proud of her children who survive her – Cathy (Scott) Williams of Leroy, IL; Rob (Becky) Hugo of Mt. Zion, IL; Todd (Lily) Hugo of Roswell, GA; Cayla (Steve) Hittmeier of Mt. Zion; and Jon Hugo of Decatur. Additionally, she especially loved being “Goddess” to six grandchildren who survive her – Taylor & Tiffany Wilson of Decatur, IL; Chloe & Callie Hugo of Mt. Zion, IL; and Drew & Macy Hittmeier of Mt. Zion.
Bonni was preceded in death by her parents, Bayless & Anna Swift; her husband, Bob Hugo; and her brother, John Swift.
Bonni’s family would like to express sincere gratitude to Becky & Susan from Traditions Health, and the Meals on Wheels volunteers - who provided her with loving care & compassion. Most especially, thanks to her “bonus” daughter, Beth Smith – who vigilantly remained by Bonni & her family’s side.
A visitation will be held from 5:00-8:00p.m. on Wednesday, June 26th at Graceland/Fairlawn Funeral Home in Decatur, IL. A private funeral service and burial will be held later.
In lieu of flowers, the family invites you donate to Meals on Wheels of Decatur at www.cc.dio.org. Condolences and memories may be shared at www.gracelandfairlawn.com.
