Carl Barker's Obituary
Niantic-Carl Barker, 93, of Niantic, peacefully passed away at 2:42 p.m. Tuesday, September 28, 2010 at his home with his family by his side.
Services to celebrate Carl's life will be10 a.m. Saturday, October 2, 2010 at Tabernacle Baptist Church, 650 N. Wyckles Rd. Visitation will be from 5-7 p.m. Friday, October 1, 2010 at Graceland/Fairlawn Funeral Home. Interment with Military Honors conducted by the Macon County Honor Guard and 'Flight Home' Ceremony will be in the Veteran's Section at Graceland Cemetery. Memorial contributions may be made to DMH Hospice or the Baptist Children's Home in Carmi, IL. Online condolences and memories may be shared at www.gracelandfairlawn.com.
Carl was born October 26, 1916, in Middletown, Ohio, the son of John and Mary Hickman. He proudly served his country in the U.S. Army during W.W. II. During his service he received seven battle stars; Tunisia, Sicily, Normandy, Northern France, Central Europe, Rhineland, and Ardennes. He also received the Meritorious Service Unit Insignia, European-African-Middle Eastern Ribbon, the American Defense Service Medal, Good Conduct Medal and five bronze stars. He was previously employed as an electrician with IBEW #369 in Louisville, Kentucky, retiring after thirty-five years of service. He was a member of Tabernacle Baptist Church. He had a great knowledge of the Bible and had taught Sunday school for many years. He also enjoyed gardening. He married Norma L. Kirkman September 1, 1978 in Las Vegas, Nevada.
He leaves behind Norma his beloved wife of over thirty-two years, son; Tom Barker and wife Laura of Shelbyville, KY, step-daughters; Ardith Corsaw and husband Dave of Smithfield, Carol Orr and husband Rod of Palmyra, MO, Joan Baker and husband Ken of Burlington, KY, and Joyce Shultz and husband Dave of Bedford, TX, step-son; Ken Kirkman and wife Terri of Tremont, a granddaughter, seven step-grandchildren, and eleven step-great-grandchildren.
He was greeted in Heaven by his parents and two sisters.
