Carol Ann Childers' Obituary
Carol Ann Pope Howerton Childers, 67, passed away September 9, 2022 at Decatur Memorial Hospital.
Carol was born, August 30, 1955 in Lincoln, IL, the daughter of Dorwin Gene and Hazel (Goodman) Pope Sr. She married Bruce Michael Howerton Sr. on March 29, 1975 in Illiopolis, IL. He passed away June 12, 1999. She later married John Childers on October 10, 2010. He passed away June 2, 2022.
Carol was a member of Macon New Life Tabernacle. She enjoyed crafting and was a great cook. She had been a Sunday School teacher for many years with her church and was also involved with the Ladies Auxiliary with the church. Carol had a great sense of humor, enjoyed the company of people, liked to talk to people about God.
She had also served on the Medical Board of the CHIC Clinic.
Surviving are her children, Sherry Howerton of Decatur, IL, Christina Howerton of Decatur, IL, Bruce Michael Howerton Jr of Decatur, IL; step children, Scott Childers (Sandra) of Bloomington, IL, Susan Heberling (Greg) of Decatur, IL, Greg Childers (Audrey) of Bloomington, IL; siblings, Gene Pope Jr (Peggy) of Venice, FL, James “Jim” Pope (Nita) of Decatur, IL, Roger Pope (Tammy) of Decatur, IL, Beverly Gharst (Lyndle) of Decatur, IL, Kent Pope (Chris) of Venice, FL, Brenda Hutton (Kevin) of Decatur, IL, aunt Sherry (Melvin) Hill of Ramsey, IL, and much-loved grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her first husband Bruce Howerton Sr., second husband John Childers, and niece Thracia Gharst.
The family would like to thank the doctors, nurses, and the entire staff of HSHS St. Mary's Hospital for the devoted care they gave to Carol.
A Celebration of Life will be held on Friday, September 23 at Life Foursquare Church (2954 W Ash Ave., Decatur, IL). Visitation will be from 11am to 1pm. The service will start at 1pm.
Cremation service will be provided by Graceland Fairlawn Funeral Home.
