Carol Marie Curtis' Obituary
Carol Marie Curtis, 67, of Decatur, passed away Friday, December 04, 2015, at Decatur Memorial Hospital, with her family by her side.
Carol was born January 23, 1948, in Detroit, MI, daughter of Eilene (Morenz) Miller. She married Kenton Curtis on May 11, 1974, in Decatur. He was the calm in her storm. She was baptized in First Lutheran Church and was a member of Holy Cross Lutheran Church where she directed the choir for several years.
Carol attended Stephen Decatur High School and graduated in 1966 with a full academic scholarship. She attended Eastern Illinois University and graduated in 1970 with a B.S. in education. She taught in Decatur Public Schools for 35 years. She loved teaching and loved her students. While teaching she held various offices in the Decatur Education Association.
Music was always a major part of her life. She started the violin at 10. She studied with George Nagy for many years. She played in the orchestra all of her school days. She sang in the children’s church choir. In high school, she sang in honor choir. She continued singing in church choirs throughout her life. She was a charter member of The Greater Decatur Chorale. She used her music in her teaching and produced several plays with her students.
Carol loved sports. She could always be found with her grandpa at the bowling alley or baseball field. She loved to play ball, bowl, golf and swim. She enjoyed watching many other sports. She also loved to walk each day when she was able, loved word games, working on the computer, baking and volunteering in various organizations.
She was survived by her husband of 41 years, Kenton; her son, who was her pride and joy, Keith; and her wonderful cousin, Billy (Irene) Jasuta.
Memorial services to celebrate the life of Carol Curtis will be 1 p.m. Thursday, December 10, 2015 at Holy Cross Lutheran Church in Decatur. Memorials may be directed to the Humane Society.
