David G. Eatock's Obituary
David G. Eatock, 79, of Decatur, passed away at 12:28 a.m. Tuesday, August 30, 2022 at the OSF Richard L. Owens Hospice Home in Peoria, IL
Born January 24, 1943 in Des Moines, Iowa to Harry and Mildred (Underwood) Eatock, he married Joan L. Tilley (Mobley) on May 6, 1967 in Litchfield, IL. He later married Nancy J. Graham on Aug 12, 1989 in Peoria, IL. She died Jan 9, 2009 in Decatur. He also was preceded in death by his parents and his sister, Beverly Shero of Jonesboro, AR.
Surviving is his son, Brian D. Eatock (Carole) of Pekin, and his grandsons, Isaiah and Ian Eatock. He also leaves his nephew and niece, David Graham of Thorton, CO, and Amy Maher (Graham) of Lakewood, CO.
David was known for his bright and dry sense of humor. Even in his last days, he was quick to respond with a joke to lighten the mood. He enjoyed collecting pipes and was rarely seen without one close by. Being a voracious reader, David devoured books. His quest to always learn was passed on to his family.
David was a beloved teacher at DeLand-Weldon High School in DeLand, Illinois for well over 30 years. Starting in the early 1970s as a guidance counselor while waiting for the English teacher to retire, the school discovered David held a minor in Zoology as well as a Master's degree in English. Thus, he soon taught both English and Biology with his quick wit and inspiring teaching style. He was a favored teacher to many students over the years. It took someone special to make Beowulf, the Canterbury Tales, and the life-cycle of a sheep liver fluke entertaining. Mr. Eatock had a way of teaching while encouraging his students.
His family and friends will gather for a graveside service at a later date.
Memorial contributions may be made to the OSF Richard L. Owens Hospice Home, 8630 IL-91, Peoria, IL 61615. His family wishes to thank the staff at the Hospice Home for taking great care of David and making his last days as comfortable as possible. They are amazing, caring, and exceptional people.
