Dorothy E. Dakan's Obituary
Dorothy E. Dakan, 99, of Decatur, passed away at 3:39 pm, Friday, October 11, 2013 in Decatur Memorial Hospital.
Dorothy, the daughter of Charles and Elnora E. (Whiteford) Dakan was born October 24, 1913 in Stanberry. MO. She attended first grade at Stanberry Star School, a one-room county school and grades 2 to 5 was at Stanberry Grade School. The Dakan family moved to Decatur, IL in October 1923. There she attended Pugh, Lincoln, Roosevelt and Decatur High School, graduating in 1931. Later she attended Millikin University.
Dorothy worked as a secretary and cashier at Western Union Telegraph Co for ten years. Then she worked as secretary and accountant at Warren & Van Praag, Inc., and Alex Van Praag Consulting Engineers, Inc., until retirement. She enjoyed her work days, reading, cross word puzzles, traveling, knitting and walking. She especially appreciated and enjoyed her pet cats. She was a dedicated member of Decatur Memorial Hospital Auxiliary and volunteer at Decatur Memorial Hospital. Dorothy was a long time (over 75 years) member of Central Christian Church where she was a member of their Keystone Sunday School Class, and a member of a Women’s Missionary Group.
She is survived by cousins, friends, neighbors and her beloved cat Susie.
She was preceded in death by her parents, and sister, Wilma.
Services to celebrate Dorothy’s life will be 11 a.m. Tuesday, October 15, 2013 in Central Christian Church; visitation will be one hour prior in the church. Private burial will take place in Graceland Cemetery. Memorials are suggested to Central Christian Church.
