Dorwin Gene Pope's Obituary
Dorwin Gene Pope, Sr., 87, of Decatur (formerly of Moweaqua) passed away on Saturday, January 19, 2013 in Imboden Creek Living Center.
Dorwin was born on September 12, 1925, in Herrick, IL, the son of Jesse and Cleta (Reeder) Pope. He graduated from Herrick High School in 1943. He served his country in the United States Navy WWII as a Chief Petty Officer stationed in Oceanside, CA. He was a member of New Life Tabernacle of Macon. Dorwin married Hazel L. Goodman on December 4, 1947 in Mt. Pulaski, IL. She preceded him in death on January 1, 2011.
Funeral services will be held 11 a.m. Wednesday, January 23, 2013 at Graceland/Fairlawn Funeral Home with Pastor Eric Ginder officiating. Visitation will be 5-8 p.m. Tuesday, January 22, 2013 at the funeral home. Burial will be at Macon County Memorial Park with military rites conducted by the Macon County Honor Guard. Memorials are suggested to the Building Fund at New Life Tabernacle of Macon.
Surviving are his children, Dorwin Gene (Peggy) Pope, Jr., of North Port, FL; James (Nita Susanne) Pope; Janet Pope; Carol (John) Howerton Childers; Beverly (Lyndle) Gharst of Decatur; Roger (Tammy) Pope of Mt. Zion; Kent (Chris) Pope of Forsyth; Brenda (Kevin) Hutton of Etowah, TN; sister, Sherry (Melvin) Hill of Ramsey, IL; brothers, Gary Pope of Herrick; Larry Pope of Edgewood, IL; Melvin (Sandy) Pope of Beecher City, IL; 25 grandchildren; and 22 great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his wife, parents, three brothers and one sister.
Dorwin was a wonderful father and husband. He was a man of strong faith and raised his children with those same beliefs. He will be missed.
The family wishes to thank the staff at Imboden Creek Living Center, Pastor Ginder and wife for their support, and would like to extend sincere appreciation to daughter Janet for her loving care of both mom and dad.
