Douglas Allen Pope's Obituary
Douglas Allen Pope, 74, of Decatur, IL, passed away in his home surrounded by his loved ones on on August 1st, 2026, after a courageous battle with stage 4 lung cancer.
Born on December 18th, 1951, in Decatur, Doug lived his entire life in the community he loved, building a legacy of hard work, generosity, and unwavering devotion to his family. Doug married his wife Julie of 48 years on July 14th, 1978.
Doug was proud of many accomplishments, including being a truck driver of 20 years, bar owner, salesman, and a landlord. Doug also loved to play pool and was on a pool league, enjoyed fishing and being on the lake. Whether through work, hobbies, or simply helping others, Doug made a lasting impact on everyone fortunate enough to know him. Above all, Doug found great joy in spending time with his family creating memories that will be cherished forever. His warmth, wisdom, determination to get things done, sense of humor, smile, and unconditional love will be deeply missed.
Doug is survived by his wife, Julie Pope; children, Heather Pope (Mike Davis), Deana Whitney (Eric), Chad Korthals (Gina) and Chris Pope (Jenny); grandchildren, Peyton Pope, Madyson Pope, Colleen & Shawn Wigfield, Taylor Whitney, Austin Davis, Colton Davis, Gage Korthals, Gatlin Korthals, and Gabby Korthals; four great-granddaughters and one great-grandson; sister, Karen Albers and Bob.
He was preceded in death by his mother, Kathleen, and father, Darrell; stepdad, Bob Shafer; sister-in-law, Rita; mother and father-in-law, Elaine and George Batorson.
A visitation will be held on Wednesday, August 5th, 2026, at Graceland/Fairlawn funeral home from 5:00-7:00 p.m. His funeral service will be held at the funeral home at 10:00 a.m. the following day, Thursday, August 6th, 2026, with burial to follow in South Macon Township Cemetery for those who would like to join the family.
Though our hearts are heavy, we find comfort in celebrating a life well lived with no more pain and suffering. Doug’s kindness, love, and devotion to his family will continue to inspire all who got to know and love him. May he rest in peace.

Now I am contented, that my life it was worthwhile, knowing that I passed along the way, I made somebody smile. When you are walking down the street, and you’ve got me on your mind, I’m walking in your footsteps, only half a step behind. So please don’t be unhappy, just because I’m out of sight, remember that I’m with you, every morning, noon, and night.”
