Evelyn Nesbit Hiser's Obituary
Evelyn “Poppy” Nesbit Hiser, beloved mother and grandmother, left this earthly world on March 15, 2014 to join those in glory who had preceded her. Evelyn was born on August 8, 1917 to Russell (Babe) Overly and Pearl Booker Overly. Evelyn married Frank (Bud) Leroy Hiser on April 13, 1937. Together they had four children, three of who survive her.
Evelyn’s life was primarily devoted to her husband and children. She was employed by First Federal for about ten years when she retired about 1982. The Hiser household back in the day was a meeting place for friends and family. Four children and all of their friends and all of the animals, domesticated and wild, kept Evelyn more than busy. The Hiser kids and their animals were always welcome at Show & Tell at Lincoln school where Evelyn serviced on the PTA and school and government elections.
The Hiser family led by Bud and Evelyn were also fortunate to take yearly summer vacations to Lake Miltona, Minnesota where they stayed at their resort cabin. This was a unique family excursion that included Aunt Minnie and Uncle Lyle and Bob and Bruce Campbell and many good Decatur friends. The long drive to Lake Miltona in the old Ford that did not have air conditioning with the house cat and dog are now fun to reminisce about. Once again, Evelyn didn’t’ get much rest for staying busy fishing, cooking and cleaning, but the kids sure had a great time. These are the memories that Evelyn helped to provide for her family.
Evelyn was a kind and beautiful woman who was always there for her family whenever they needed her. She supported them through thick and thin. Although she lived to be ninety-six years old, her love of life and joy was only curtailed a short time ago. Evelyn has enjoyed good health and good memory far beyond what most of us would ever expect.
Evelyn leaves to mourn her passing, her son, George Hiser (Marcia) of Excelsior Springs, MO, her daughter, Carol (Susie) Forbes (Mike), and her daughter, Mary Elizabeth Hiser, both of Decatur. She also leaves seven grandchildren, Russell Hiser, Jeffrey Hiser, Cindy Maske, Excelsior Springs, MO, Aaron Hiser of Tucson, AZ, Staci Bonds (Gary), Tye Rowan of Decatur, Derek Rowan (Leeann) of Chicago. Nine great-grandchildren and eight great-great grandchildren.
Evelyn’s nickname originated when granddaughter Staci, as a toddler, had no living grandpa’s, so grandma became her “Poppy.”
Evelyn was preceded in death by her husband, Frank Leroy Hiser and her son, James Russell Hiser, her parents and her sister, Bernadine Overly Hawkins.
The family wishes to thank the nurses and caretakers at Hickory Point Christian Village at Forsyth, IL for the excellent care, kindness and patience extended to our mother during her stay there.
A graveside service to celebrate Evelyn Hiser’s life will be at Graceland Cemetery, 2 p.m. Tuesday, March 18, 2014 with burial next to her husband and son at Graceland Cemetery.
