Everett L. Smith's Obituary
Everett L. Smith, 82, of Palmetto, Florida, formerly of East Moline, IL, passed away on June 20, 2022 in Bradenton, Florida.
He was born March 12, 1940 in Decatur, IL, the son of John L. and Dorothy F. (Hammel) Smith. Although not having children of his own, he had a significant role in many of the lives of his 20 nieces and nephews and his many great nieces and nephews, who enjoyed spending time with their Uncle Everett. He graduated from Springfield High School in Springfield, Illinois.
Everett retired as a union sheet metal worker in 2000. He spent his winters in Palmetto and later moved there permanently from East Moline, IL.
In his words, Everett was “a pretty good softball player and pretty good at tennis,” and gave tennis lessons at Tree Lakes Resort in Palmetto, where he lived.
He is survived by one sister, Jane (Richard) Shofner and one brother, Ron (Mary) Smith, and 14 nieces and nephews. He was also survived by his lifelong friend, Jim (Mary Beth) Knox. He was preceded in death by 5 brothers, John L. Smith, Jr., Larry Gant, Jerry Gant, David Gant, and John R. Smith.
Funeral services will be held at 11:00 A.M. on Saturday (07-02-2022) at Graceland Fairlawn Funeral Home with visitation one hour prior to the service. Burial will be in Macon County Memorial Park, Harristown, IL.
