Gary Lynn Shutter's Obituary
Gary Lynn Shutter, 84, of Decatur, Illinois, went to be with the Lord on Thanksgiving Day, November 23, 2023, at Aspen Creek of Sullivan.
Gary was born in Decatur on May 10, 1939, the son of Jay and Catherine (McCaughey) Shutter. He had a variety of careers throughout his life, having been a carpenter, a restaurant owner (the original Mr. G’s in Decatur), and a quality assurance inspector (for Wilbert Vault Company). He served his country proudly in the National Guard. Gary married Gloria Crow on September 3, 1960, in Decatur, and together they raised three children during their 63 years of marriage. He was a faithful member of Mt. Calvary Lutheran Church. In his spare time, he enjoyed working in the yard and using his carpentry skills to build things.
Gary is survived by his wife Gloria; children Stacey (Dana) Galemore, Shannen (Carl Baker) Ray, and John Jay “JJ” Shutter; grandchildren Erika (Cody) Sleeth and Tori (Josh Saul) Hedden; great-grandchild Crue Sleeth; sister-in-law Norma Cooper; many nieces and nephews; family friend Doug Davidson; and beloved dog Rosie. He was preceded in death by his parents, brother Tom Shutter, parents-in-law Harold and Margaret Crow, and brother-in-law Floyd Cooper.
Special thanks to the staff at Aspen Creek in Sullivan for their wonderful care.
