George Siegel Grimes, 96, passed away on Sunday, October 12, 2025, in Decatur, IL. George was born on March 8, 1929, in Litchfield, IL, the son of Stephen D. and Myrtle L. (Wilhite) Grimes.
George married his beloved wife, Vivian A. Stockstill, on June 5, 1949, in Litchfield, IL. They spent a wonderful 70 years together before her passing on April 25, 2019. George worked for the Illinois Central Railroad for 21 years before retiring. He then went on to work at Firestone in Decatur, where he worked for 35 years before his second retirement. George was known as a man who could fix anything, using his experience on the railroad to craft and fix anything you could think of. He enjoyed woodworking and attending a good auction. He loved spending time at Vandalia Lake with Vivian and their family.
George is survived by his four children — Wayne L. Grimes of TX, Harold L. (Arlene) Grimes of TX, Steven G. Grimes of Oakley, IL, and Margaret C. Wingard of Decatur, IL; four grandchildren — Harold Grimes, Jr., Siegel Grimes, Ryan Paslay, and Andrew Wingard; 7 great-grandchildren; and sister-in-law — Harriet Grimes of Litchfield, IL.
George was preceded in death by his wife, Vivian Grimes; parents — Stephen and Myrtle Grimes; brothers — Gerald and Richard Grimes; sister — Grace Stockstill; and granddaughter — Tracy Dailey.
Honoring George’s wishes, Graceland/Fairlawn Funeral Home is providing cremation services and no services will be held at this time.
