George Alvin Sloan's Obituary
George Alvin Sloan passed away peacefully on June 5, 2024.
George, 93, was born July 13, 1930, to John and Irene (Brooks) Sloan in Decatur, Illinois. He proudly lived in Decatur his whole life except for his time in the United States Navy (1947-1950) on the ship Tarawa and a brief time in Somerville, MA in 1950 after his discharge. After his return to Decatur, he went to work at Borg-Warner where he met his wife of 61 years, D’Arbra Lou DeFore.
Later, George left B-W to begin his 30-year career as a machinist at Caterpillar in Decatur. An avid fisherman since he was a young child, his summer vacations were always spent fishing in Minnesota. A sports enthusiast all his life, he enjoyed golfing trips with coworkers and playing on his bowling league. Children and grandchildren alike have fond memories of him teaching them to play ping pong and pool and going for long walks around the neighborhood while smoking his cigar. Many have even tried to emulate his talents of whistling and snapping his fingers.
George is survived by his son Judd (Erika) Sloan, daughter Amy MacLee and daughter-in-law Carol Sloan, as well as nine grandchildren and 30 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his wife, Darb, son Randy, one great grandson and all five of his brothers and sisters.
A Funeral Service will be held at 11:00 A.M. Tuesday (06-11-2024) at Graceland Fairlawn Funeral Home with visitation from 10:00 A.M. until 11:00 A.M. The burial will be at Graceland Cemetery, Decatur, IL.
