Decatur-George T. Smith, 90, of Decatur, passed away 8:57 pm Sunday, June 6, 2010 at Fair Havens Christian Home.
Services to celebrate George's life will be 10:00 am Thursday, June 10, 2010 at Graceland/Fairlawn Funeral Home with Pastor Tom Compton officiating. Visitation will be from 5 ' 7:00 pm Wednesday at the funeral home. Interment with military rites provided by the Macon County Honor Guard will be in Graceland Cemetery. Memorial donations may be made to the American Legion Castle Williams Post 105. Online memories and condolences may be shared with George's family at www.gracelandfairlawn.com.
George was born on May 21, 1920 in Decatur the son of Jessie and Sarah Smith. George and Edith M. Compton married on September 15, 1946 in Shelby county. Edith preceded him in death on December 17, 2005. George and Edith were founding members of Christ United Methodist Church, he was a member of the American Legion, he was an avid St. Louis Cardinal Baseball fan and Illini Basketball fan. George proudly served his country in the US Army, serving in both WWII and the Korean Conflict.
Left behind to cherish his memories are his son Rick (wife-Joyce) Smith of New York, New York and his daughter Diane Rager of Decatur; his four grandchildren Tim (wife-Judy) Smith, Joe Smith, Zach Rager, and Lucas Rager; on great-granddaughter Madeline Smith; and his brother Bob (wife-Verna) Smith of Decatur.
George will be reunited in heaven with his wife Edith, his parents, his brother Kenny, his sister Donna and his son-in-law Mark.
