Gertrude Hannon's Obituary
Decatur – Gertrude Hannon, 99, of Decatur passed away on Tuesday, July 3, 2012 in Imboden Creek Living Center.
Mass of Christian Burial to celebrate the life of Gertrude will be 11:00 am Saturday, July 7, 2012 in St. Thomas Catholic Church. Visitation will be one hour prior to service in the Church. Burial will be in Friends Creek Cemetery in Argenta. Memorials are suggested to St. Thomas Catholic Church, 2160 N. Edwards Street, Decatur, IL 62526.
Gertrude Cooper Hannon was born June 5, 1913 on a dairy farm in Argenta the daughter of David and Ida Jimison Cooper. She graduated from Argenta High School, Illinois State University, and Millikin University. She began her teaching career in a one room school house at Rural Park School. She retired from teaching 35 years later, from Garfield Elementary in Decatur.
Gertrude married Paul Hannon in 1938. They were both active members of St. Thomas Catholic Church in Decatur throughout their lives. They had almost 60 years together. After retiring they were able to travel. They especially loved Arizona where they spent winters for over 25 years.
Gertrude was able to achieve another goal after retiring from teaching. She became an artist, completing over 200 oil paintings which are on display in homes from coast to coast.
Gertrude was preceded in death by her parents, husband, Paul, and her three brothers, George Cooper, Carlyle Cooper, and Clark Cooper.
Gertrude is survived by loving, nephews, nieces, cousins, and one sister-in-law.
