She was born to the late William Canaday and Inez Green Canaday, August 09, 1920 in LeRoy. She graduated from LeRoy High School in 1938 and married the late Delmar Carlson on May 30, 1939. They farmed north of LeRoy until 1947 before relocating to Bloomington and finally to Decatur in 1956. He preceded her in death in September of 1983. Hazel worked for 26 years in the offices of Decatur Macon County Hospital. Hazel is remembered by her children and grandchildren as kind, patient, fun, open-minded, and completely devoted to her family. She loved to sew, dance, play cards, bowl and be around people. Until age 87, she danced 3 times a week, bowled twice and exercised 5 mornings each week. Until her death, she was always ready to accept an invitation to “anywhere” and she lived life to the fullest. Her ambition after high school graduation was to be “A good homemaker”. She certainly succeeded.
She is survived by her son, Gary Carlson (Kathie) of Ft. Lauderdale, Daughter, Linda England (Dave) of Mt. Zion, grandchildren Lisa England Miller (Jim), Jon England (Tracy) and Kristen Carlson, great grandchildren (Nick Miller and Brandt Miller). Other family members include Frances Keehma (sister), Frances Peyton (aunt), Donald Carlson (brother-in-law), and several nieces & nephews.
We know she would like to extend a special thanks and a warm farewell to her loyal & caring friends Helen Bayless & Ester McEvoy, compassionate caretaker and friend Jeanette Wooley, Dr. Heimbrecht & staff, Keystone Meadows staff and residents and those at Fair Havens Christian Home.
