James Dale Barter Sr.'s Obituary
James Dale Barter, Sr., 92, of Decatur, Illinois, passed away January 17, 2026, at HSHS St. Mary’s Hospital.
James was born in Decatur on January 21, 1933, the son of William and Daisy (Gentry) Barter. He married A. Marlene Collins on March 6, 1951, in Edwardsville, Illinois. They enjoyed 55 years of married life until her death in 2006.
James worked as a maintenance mechanic at PPG for over 35 years. He was a member of Mt. Zion Lutheran Church. He was an avid collector of Native American artifacts. His greatest joy was spending time with his grandchildren. He doted on them, buying them lunch, attending every sporting event and concert, and making sure they had ample “burger money.” He will be greatly missed.
James is survived by his sons William (Linda) Barter, David Barter, and John (Cheri) Barter; brother Mike (Sue) Barter; sister Rosemary Alderson; 10 grandchildren; and 14 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents, wife A. Marlene Barter, son James D. Barter, Jr., great-granddaughter Haley E. Davis, one sister, and 3 brothers.
Private services will be held. Burial will be in Graceland Cemetery. Condolences may be shared with the family at https://www.gracelandfairlawn.com.
