I just found out about Jim's passing in 2015. We were great friends and served in the Navy and Vietnam together. I was his "best man" in his first marriage which only lasted a few months. We were together in the Philippines and Vietnam in 1965-1966.He called me at my office in Florida about 10 years ago. I would like to talk to his wife or family to learn more about him and to express my condolences on his passing. He never mentioned he was ill and he called me to tell me about his 4 stripes he had earned and how it was ironic that he stayed in the Navy. I worked at the Caterpillar Decatur plant from 1990 to 2001 – with most of my time stationed in Northeast England. I had the utmost respect for Dr. Ringer. Our International Service Employees in the UK faced many medical challenges and had a tough time maneuvering through the National Health Care Sysmem. Dr. Ringer make us a priority, which was appreciated by so many families. Personally, his quiet smile and sense of humor made him a very likable colleague. He served the profession with Excellence.

I worked at Cat for 40 years while Dr. Ringer was the on-site doctor. I got to know him after a severe work-related injury and he and I got along well. Son Bernard was friends with my life companions kids while they were in school so we kind of had common ground outside of our jobs. Dr. Ringer had an open door policy for me and I consulted him on many heath subjects, my own and my companions, I had great liking and respect for the man. We are very sorry to learn of his passing and wish to express our sympathy and understanding to his family. There are not enough words to express the love and appreciation due Dr. James Howard Ringer. Doc and I came from the same county in Indiana but didn't get to know each other until he came to Caterpillar. We did our best to show the world what is so great about coming from Indiana. We shared some memorable trips to Butler University. He is a member of the Butler Sports Hall of Fame. He was revered by his team members and the Staff at Butler.Everything Doc was involved in was presented with a quiet dignity, without thought of personal gain or recognition and all driven by his love of God and all of God's Children. Even though we know it is coming for all of us, when we lose someone of Dr. Ringer's stature, the loss is staggering.When I look around and back to all those people I know and have known, there are a handful who stand out as truly outstanding human beings. Doc was one of those. To those of you who read this, take a moment to stop and reflect and ask yourself; did you ever know a better person? You may have been fortunate enough to have known his equal, but not his better.The historian Shelby Foote, when telling of the reunion of the Civil War veterans of Gettysburg in 1913, said that the old soldiers hoped that when they had passed on they would all be in some place where by day they would re-fight their battles and then in the evening sit around their campfires & tell stories of their exploits. I think something of this nature is in the hearts of most soldiers and sailors. When my time comes, I hope Doc will stop by my campfire!While the loss to me is huge, I know the loss to his family is even greater. I met Dr. Ringer(CAPT) at Great Lakes Naval Base working at BR. Clinic 237. He was a breath of "fresh air" he came at a time when the "line" Officers came and daily abused the clinic staff. The clinic had a LCDR-officer type come in and ranting and raving about he didn't have the time to wait—so Capt Ringer stuck his head out of his office and said, "Come in—I get all the ButtHeads". The officer went in–30 seconds later the Officer(patient) left in Great disgust–and I asked him(with fellow staff Members behind me) what he said to him. The patient told Dr. Ringer that he "had a cold" and Capt Ringer replied–there is no cure for the common cold and get the "H—" out of here. I can tell you our(the clinc) spirits were never lifted so High. People don't believe in Angels—Ha! One of them came and went–before our eyes!! —-J.Vincent Wright, PA
