Jerry David Brunson's Obituary
BRUNSON, Jerry D., 81 of Decatur, died August 15, 2025, at home surrounded by his loving family. A private family graveside service will be held at Graceland Cemetery, and a celebration of his life will be held in Gulf Shores, Alabama, at a later date.
Jerry was born September 18, 1943, in Neoga, Illinois, son of Dorothy (Kelsheimer) Brunson and Dale Brunson. He served 51 years combined between the Decatur Post Office (retired 1999) and the Postal Employees Credit Union (retired 2025).
Jerry loved fishing, bowling, stained glass work, woodworking and handywork, family game nights, but most of all he loved his family. Jerry treasured and rarely missed the grandchildren’s hockey games, volleyball games, band concerts, baseball games, school functions, games of miniature golf or any events the children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren participated in. He was always present.
He was survived by his wife of 63 years, Ann, and his children: Susan (Brunson) Bishop, husband Doug; and Andrea (Brunson) Sheffer, husband Bill; grandchildren: Samantha Bishop; Alex Bishop and wife Paige; Ian Sheffer and wife Rebekah; and Emily Sheffer; and great-grandchildren: Bailey Bishop; Matthew, Tanner, Abigail, and Jayden Sheffer.
His parents proceeded him in death. The family would like to thank the Cancer Care Center of Decatur, their team of nurses, and Dr. Kairouz; as well as Dr. Timothy Miller and Dr. Kristin Newcome of Priority Health Family Medicine.
Graceland Fairlawn Funeral Home is providing cremation services for Jerry. Private graveside services will be held in Decatur. Every year since his retirement in 1999, Jerry and Ann took their entire family to Gulf Shores for a week on the beach. The family will celebrate his life at a later date in Gulf Shores, Alabama. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that you pay his kindness forward or make someone laugh today. Condolences may be shared with the family at https://www.gracelandfairlawn.com.
