Jerry Lee "Jake" Sutherland's Obituary
Jerry Lee “Jake” Sutherland, 78, formerly of Decatur, passed away on Sunday, September 7, 2025, in Vandalia, IL.
Jake was born on Christmas Eve of 1946 in Decatur, IL. He was a graduate of St. Teresa High School and had attended St. Thomas Catholic Church. He served his country in the United States Army, earning a National Defense Service Medal and his status as a Sharpshooter during the Vietnam War. Additionally, he had served as a Chaplain’s Assistant throughout this period.
He worked many places during his lifetime, including Decatur’s ADM as well as Caterpillar, where he retired. Although he was never married nor had children of his own, Jake enjoyed spending time with his extended family. He had participated in both bowling and pool leagues in Decatur in the past.
For the past few years, Jake had lived at the Vandalia Healthcare and Rehabilitation Center, where the staff enjoyed him and he seemed to be truly content. Special thanks to the staff at VHRC and to Susan for all that you have done for Jake.
Jake is preceded in death by his parents, Jack Eugene Sutherland Sr. And Susan “Sue” Strong Sutherland; brothers, Jack Sutherland Jr and wife Doris, and Jim Sutherland; sister, Judy Gentry and husband Mike.
Those surviving include his nieces and nephews, Aimee Bradshaw and husband Larry, Melissa Cohen, Jody Gentry, Mark Sutherland and wife Casey, Jeffrey Gentry and wife Holly, David Gentry and wife Catherine.
Funeral service will be held for Jake Sutherland at 11:00 AM on Wednesday, September 17, 2025, at Graceland/Fairlawn Funeral Home. Visitation will be held an hour prior to service, and committal with military rites will take place in Graceland Cemetery afterward.
