Joan G. Stewart Kennedy's Obituary
Decatur-Joan G. Stewart Kennedy, 85, of Decatur, passed away at 4:33 p.m. Tuesday, February 15, 2011 at her home with her family by her side.
Services to celebrate Joan's life will be 3 p.m. Saturday, February 19, 2011 at Graceland/Fairlawn Funeral Home. Visitation will be for one hour prior to the services at the funeral home. Private family interment will be held. Memorial contributions may be made to the Decatur Macon County Senior Center. Online condolences and memories may be shared at www.gracelandfairlawn.com.
Joan was born July 26, 1925 in Decatur, the daughter of Frank H. and Catherine (Gunning) Stewart. She graduated from Decatur High School in 1943 and attended St. Mary's College. She married Robert P. Kennedy August 21, 1946, later they divorced. She was a devoted mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother. She served on the Board of Directors of the Decatur Macon County Senior Center and volunteered her time at St. Mary's Hospital and SHIP where she was a medicare counselor. She enjoyed her grandchildren, adored her dogs, spending time with her family, music, traveling, reading, and sudukou.
She leaves behind her son Dr. Kevin Kennedy and wife Jane of Gig Harbor, Washington, daughters Kathleen Rakowski and husband Dr. Kenneth of Lake Forest, Illinois, Sheila Fawcett and husband John of Decatur, Patty Rode and husband Don of St. Louis, Missouri, Jeanine McCoy and husband Patrick of St. Charles, Missouri, and Maureen Williams and husband Jeffery of Decatur, brother John Stewart of Palm Coast, Florida, grandchildren Kristen Brown and husband Breck, Kara Rakowski LaFrombois and husband Rick, Michael Fawcett, Joe Fawcett, Caitlin Kennedy, Colin Kennedy, Maxwell Rode, Alex Rode, Casey McCoy and fiancée Justin, Shannon McCoy, Lauren Williams, and Melissa Williams, great-grandchildren Bennett, Bergen, and Brenna Brown and Quinn LaFrombois, and cousin Stephen G. Graliker.
She was reunited in Heaven with her parents and son Thomas Joseph Kennedy.
The family would like to give a special thanks to Dr. Rademacher, Dr. Trachtenberg, Dr. Caceres and Ellen NP, and Marcia and the nurses and staff at DMH Home Healthcare for all of their compassionate care.
Joan will be remembered for her quick wit and keen sense of humor, compassion, gentle nature, faith, and deep love and devotion to her family and dogs. We will miss her so.
