Decatur- John L. Chargois III, 67, of Decatur, departed this life on Saturday, August 11, 2012, at D.M.H Emergency Room.
A service to celebrate the life of John will be held at 11:00 a.m. Saturday, August 18, 2012 at St. Peter's A.M.E Church, visitation will be from 6-8:00 p.m. Friday, August 17, 2012, at Graceland/Fairlawn Funeral Home. Interment will be at Camp Butler National Cemetery. Memorial contributions may be directed to the family.
John was born July 24, 1945 in Beaumont, TX to the union of Mr. John L. Chargois Jr. and Adelaide (White) Chargois-Price. He attended New Salem Missionary Baptist Church at a young age. After some schooling in Beaumont, TX, he graduated from Stephen Decatur High School (Running Reds) where he was an outstanding football player, and was on the wrestling team. He was drafted into the United States Army and proudly served his country in the Vietnam War, while attending college in Kirksville, Mo. Attending Northeast Missouri he continued to play football. As a young man he had several jobs including Prairie Farms Ice Cream, Blondie Bells, Mississippi Valley Steel, and finishing his working career as a Time Keeper at Wagner's Foundry. He married Lessie (Hart) Chargois in 1975.
He leaves not to mourn but to cherish fond memories, his wife of 36 yrs.; mother, Adelaide Price, sister; Linda A. Chargois; step-sisters; Faye Lestradre, Jill Jones, and JaRuth Brown all of Decatur, Children; Zinda Chargois-Jackson (fiancé Christopher James Sr.), LaSonja Chargois, John L. Chargois IV (fiancé Eunice Smith), Tanja (Victor) Chargois-Abernathy, Regina A. Hart, Eric Hart, and Bryant (Lashonda) Hart, nineteen grandchildren, and one great-grandchild, special brother-in-law, Lester Eric Hart, and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and other relatives and friends.
John was preceded in death by his father, sister Bessie Williams, aunts; Blanchie Woods, and Gladys White, favorite uncle; Eugene White, and special niece; Belva A. Chargois, and one great-grandchild.
