John Clarence Closs' Obituary
John Clarence Closs, 74, of Decatur, Illinois, passed away peacefully on February 15, 2025, with his family at his side at Imboden Creek Senior Living.
John was born in Decatur on December 2, 1950, the son of Melvin and Esther (Arthalony) Closs. He married Annettia Metzger on May 26, 1978, in Decatur. John was an electrician and owner of Closs Electric. He took over the operation of the company from his father and decades later turned it over to his son. In his free time, John enjoyed attending his grandchildren’s ball games, watching Fox News, mowing on his John Deere tractor, taking care of his beloved dogs, and playing cards on Friday nights. He was a faithful member of Resurrection Parish in Illiopolis. He was a longtime member of the Knights of Columbus and the Metro Decatur Homebuilders Association.
John is survived by his sons Ryan Maurer of Decatur, Gregory (Kourtney) Closs of Mt. Zion, and Jonathon (Amanda) Closs of Niantic; daughter Jennifer (Jon) Durflinger of Decatur; brother Richard Closs; sisters Melba Monson and Barbara Tierney; 12 grandchildren; and 8 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his wife Annettia, his parents, sister-in-law Sandra Closs, and brothers-in-law Bill Monson and Rich Tierney.
Visitation for John will be from 3pm to 5pm on Sunday, February 23, at Graceland Fairlawn Funeral Home. A funeral service will be held at 11:30am on Monday, February 24, also at the funeral home. Burial in Macon County Memorial Park will follow the service. Memorials may be directed to the Macon County Animal Shelter. Condolences may be shared with the family at www.gracelandfairlawn.com.
