John Edward Potter's Obituary
John Edward Potter, 89, of Lincoln, IL, formerly of Decatur, Il past away June 28, 2018 at The Christian Village, Lincoln, IL.
John was born March 7, 1929 in Taylorville, IL the son of Raymond Kenneth and Ruth (Terpening) Potter. He married Reva Iola Erlenbusch on December 1, 1951 in Indianapolis, IN. She preceded him in death on December 17, 1993.
John served most of his life as a youth minister, music minister and band director for the Salvation Army. He also operated the men’s shelter and had a special love for the children, who would come to the Salvation Army.
Music was a great love of his life and he composed many of his own songs. He was also an avid Illini Basketball fan and enjoyed watching sports.
Surviving are his daughter, Pamela McDonnough (Mike) of Emden, IL; grandchildren, Kim Fontone (Jachin) of Lincoln, IL, Crystal Sheley (Manuel Nunez) of Willowbrook, IL, Marcus McDonnough of Pekin, IL, Cary Fitzpatrick of Bloomington, IL; great grandchildren, Ashley, Blake, Zac, Gaige, Logan, Tate and one adopted great granddaughter, Zoi.
Funeral services will be held at 1:00 PM Wednesday, July 4, 2018 at the Salvation Army in Decatur. Visitation will be from 5 – 8 PM Tuesday, July 3, 2018 at Graceland Fairlawn Funeral Home. Burial will be at Graceland Cemetery.
Memorials: Salvation Army Camp or The Christian Village.
