John Higgins' Obituary
John M. Higgins, 66, of Decatur, passed away Friday, August 30, 2019 in his home, surrounded by his loving family.
John was born November 8, 1952, the son of John L. Higgins and Carol J. (Mitchell) Phelps. He married Cynthia G. Silkwood on June 29, 1974, in Decatur.
John is survived by his wife, Cynthia; two daughters, Jessica (Brandon) Ellison of Decatur and Jodi Higgins of Latham; three grandchildren, Kolton, Kaidon, and Klayton; his two sisters, Julie (Jerry) Ward of Rockwall, Texas and Jill Unger of Fate, Texas; his two sisters-in-law, Gretchen Bonds of Decatur and Evelyn (Robert) Whitacre of Decatur, step-mother, Roxie Higgins of Villa Hills, KY and step-sister, Tonica Leady of Edwardsville, IL. He was preceded in death by his grandparents and his parents.
John worked on the railroad for 40 years. During his time off, he enjoyed spending time with family especially his grandchildren. He also enjoyed camping, woodworking, making stain glass and going on “drives”.
The family would like to extend a special thank you to everyone that supported the family during the ten plus years he fought to make more memories. A special thank you to hospice, especially Darryl and Debbie, who supported the family to the very end.
A memorial service will be held at 11:00 a.m. Wednesday, September 4, 2019 at Graceland/Fairlawn Funeral Home. Visitation will be held one hour prior to the service at the funeral home. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Alzheimer’s Association.
