John Euel Roberts' Obituary
John Euel Roberts, 94, of Decatur, Illinois, went home to the Lord on Wednesday, October 23, 2024, at Imboden Creek Senior Living Center.
John was born in Gadsden, Alabama, on May 8, 1930, the son of David and Lou Irene (Dickson) Roberts. At the age of 20, he married Freda Jacoby, on April 14, 1951, in Oreana, Illinois. John worked as a car inspector for B&O Railroad (later CSX Railroad) for 42 years, retiring at the age of 62. In his spare time, he enjoyed gardening, fishing, and hunting. Even to the age of 94, he reveled in spending time caring for his vegetable garden and yard. He was very generous in sharing his gardening knowledge, and many of his friends acknowledge him as the reason their own gardens are so fruitful. He was loved and admired by all who knew him. He was a faithful member of Metropolitan Baptist Church of Decatur.
John is survived by his wife Freda; children Rita Hughes and Jerry Roberts, both of Decatur; and sister Ellie Thacker of Alabama. He was preceded in death by his parents, brothers Oscar Roberts, Earl Roberts, and Marshall Roberts, and one grandson.
Visitation for John will be from 10am to 11am Wednesday, October 30, at Graceland Fairlawn Funeral Home and will be followed by a funeral service at 11am. Burial in Boiling Springs Cemetery will follow the service. Memorials may be directed to Metropolitan Baptist Church of Decatur.
John’s family would like to extend special thanks to the staff of Imboden Creek Senior Living Center for their kind, compassionate care of John.
