Johnny "John" Carl Norman's Obituary
Johnny "John" Carl Norman, age 75, a long-time resident of both Fort Myers, FL and Decatur, IL, passed away on Wednesday, February 5, 2025, following a courageous battle with Pulmonary Fibrosis, which he developed as a result of bravely serving his country in Vietnam.
Born on July 18, 1949, in Decatur, IL, John was the beloved son of the late Carl and Melba (Devine) Norman and son of the heart of his stepmother, Patricia Norman. He was a proud United States Army combat veteran who served honorably from 1969 to1971in Vietnam as an MP (Military Police) in the 82nd Airborne Division, during which time he was exposed to toxins that ultimately led to his pulmonary disease.
John graduated from MacArthur High School (1967) and Sangamon State University (1981), where he built a foundation for a life filled with passion and adventure. He had a deep love for fishing and an enduring fascination with his Corvettes. He and Marsha, his wife of 33 years, built long-lasting friendships during numerous trips around the country with members of their Corvette club, making lasting memories. He also traveled extensively throughout his long and successful career as VP of Manufacturing, visiting places like China, Australia, Kuala Lumpur, Germany, Canada, and Belgium.
Known for his remarkable storytelling and genuine love for people, John was a true friend and neighbor to all. He earned the affectionate title of "Mr. Home Depot" within his current community, as neighbors knew they could always rely on his expertise and willingness to help. He was a great problems solver and everyone, from colleagues to family, friends, and neighbors, came to him for help and advice. He never met a stranger, and had a positive impact on countless lives. He was a loving son, brother, uncle, father, and husband. John's greatest joy came from his family and seeing his wife's smile, and he made it his mission to make her laugh, every day.
John is survived by his loving wife, Marsha Norman of Fort Myers, FL; two children, son Robert “Rob” Norman of Fort Myers and stepdaughter Cami Cacciatore (Stephen) of Fort Myers, FL; his stepmother, Patricia Norman of Jacksonville, FL; three siblings, Tina Kisner (Scott) of Jacksonville, FL, Cheri Tiggelaar (Jake) of Pequot Lakes, MN, and Mike Norman (Jody) of Washington, IL; numerous nieces, nephews, extended family members, and friends. He was preceded in death by his father, mother, and sisters Tammy and Linda.
A celebration of life will be held at 10am, Saturday, April 26, 2025, at Holy Cross Lutheran Church, 3778 N. Water St, Decatur, IL 62526, John will be laid to rest in Decatur, IL at Graceland Cemetery.
John's legacy is defined by his bravery, his unwavering kindness, and his dedication to those he loved. His love and friendship will be deeply missed by all who had the honor of knowing him.
