Joseph M. Meyers' Obituary
Decatur-Joseph M. Meyers, 73, of Decatur, passed away Wednesday, December 2, 2015 in Decatur Memorial Hospital.
Joe was born November 12, 1942 in Peoria, Illinois, the son of Joseph and Helen (McMullen) Meyers. He proudly served his country in U.S. Naval Reserves. He was previously employed as an officer with the Decatur Police Department from 1962-1988 retiring with the rank of Lieutenant. He then became a financial advisor for A.G. Edwards. Joe was a member of Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic Church, Knights of Columbus Council #577 Decatur where he was past treasurer, Very Reverend Jeremiah J. Murphy Assembly #0211, and very active in the American Diabetes Association. He was a motorcycle enthusiast and member of the Goldwing Motorcycle Club and enjoyed photography and camping. He married Sandra Kaye Cooley December 2, 1978 in Decatur. She preceded him in death July 7, 2005.
Joe leaves behind his son Scott Meyers, daughters Sharon Zapp, Susan Meyers, and Jamie Meyers; sister, Mary Norman; five grandchildren, and four great-grandchildren.
Joe was preceded in death by his parents and wife.
Inurnment services to celebrate Joe’s life will be 11 AM Tuesday, December 8, 2015 at the Valhalla II Columbarium in Graceland Cemetery with Rev. Rick Weltin officiating. Visitation will be from 2-4 PM Saturday, December 5, 2015 at the Graceland/Fairlawn Funeral Home. Memorials are suggested to Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic Church or the American Diabetes Association.
