George Baker's Obituary
Lawrence “George” Baker, 79, of Decatur, passed away on Friday, November 29, 2024.
He was born on July 10, 1945, in Peoria, IL. He was a son of the late Otis Baker and Mildred Cutler Baker.
George married his wife, Sandy, on October 23, 1981. They spent the next 43 years supporting one another and traveling when they were able. Whether it was down the street or across the country, everywhere was an adventure as long as they were together.
Known to be a man of few words, George evinced a deep, abiding love and concern for his family. He faced many health issues over the last 40 years; he bore a long, suffering decline with no complaint, focusing instead upon the blessings that life has to offer. He was always ready with a smile, a helping hand, and an easygoing attitude. The world will be a lesser place for his passing, but his family and friends have been honored and fortunate to have shared their lives with this amazing man.
In addition to his parents, he is preceded in death by: son, Keith Baker; and siblings, Betty, Bev, Dale, and Becky.
Those surviving include: his wife, Sandy Whitehead Baker; daughter, Jill (Brad) Rau; Siblings, Judy (Sherrill) Burgess, Sandy Beals, and Violet (Chad) Cooley; grandchildren, Bradford (Jenny) Rau, Christian Rau, and Brendan Rau; great-grandchildren, Scarlett and Clara; nieces and nephews, Michelle, Shelby, Nicky, Deanna, Gail, Mike, Woody, Ty, and Peeter.
The family of George Baker will receive friends from 10:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. on Monday, December 9, 2024, at Graceland/Fairlawn Funeral Home. Funeral service will begin at 11:00 a.m., officiated by Pastor Dave Brown, with burial to follow in Fairlawn Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to St. Jude Children’s Hospital.
