Leonard E. "Speed" Wetherell's Obituary
Decatur-Leonard E. “Speed” Wetherell, 86, of Decatur, passed away Tuesday, September 16, 2014 at the Illinois Veteran Home in Quincy.
Speed was born January 12, 1928 in Mt. Auburn, Illinois, the son of William and Marie (Syfert) Wetherell. He proudly served his country in the U.S. Army during World War II. He retired from Heinkel’s Packing Company after forty years of service. He was a member of Boiling Springs Church of God and traveled the world on lay mission trips. He was an avid golfer and bowler. He married JoAnn Smith September 28, 1947. She preceded him in death February 18, 1967. He then married Mary Louise Wheatley October 6, 1967. She preceded him in death December 20, 1999.
He leaves behind his children Cheryl Lane and husband Michael of Forsyth and Kelly D. Wetherell and fiancé Wanda White of Mahomet, daughter-in-law Patricia Wetherell, sister-in-law Bessie Wetherell, grandchildren Jodi Wrobleski and husband Joe, Taylor Charles Wetherell, Zoe Bye Wetherell, Nicole Lankford, and Jared Lankford, and four great-grandchildren.
He was reunited in Heaven with his parents, wife JoAnn, wife Mary Louise, son William Charles Wetherell, four brothers and one sister.
Services to celebrate Speed’s life will be 10 a.m. Saturday, September 20, 2014 at Graceland/Fairlawn Funeral Home. Visitation will be from 5-7 p.m. Friday, September 19, 2014 at the funeral home. Burial with military honors conducted by the Macon County Honor Guard will be in the Veteran’s Section at Graceland Cemetery. Memorials are suggested to the Parkinson’s Foundation or the Veteran’s Administration.
