Lois M. Burton's Obituary
Decatur-Lois M. Burton, 78, of Decatur passed away at 7:20 a.m. Sunday, January 3, 2010 at Moweaqua Nursing & Retirement Center.
Services to celebrate Lois’ life will be 10 a.m. Friday, January 8, 2010 at Graceland/Fairlawn Funeral Home. Visitation will be from 5-7 p.m. Thursday, January 7, 2010 at the funeral home. Inurnment will be at a later date.
Memorial contributions may be made to Families of Spinal Muscular Atrophy (FSMA), 925 Busse Rd. Elk Grove Village, IL 60007. Online condolences and memories may be shared with the family at www.gracelandfairlawn.com.
Lois was born December 3, 1931 in Cincinnati, Ohio the daughter of John Joseph and Florence Ann (Spevacek) Prohaska, Jr. She received her BS from University of Cincinnati College of Nursing & Health in 1954. She worked at Cincinnati General Hospital as the Head Nurse on the women’s medical floor until April of 1956 when she began her family. She was a housewife and mother until 1980. She went back to school and received her Masters Degree in human developmental psychology from Sangamon State University. She was hired by Adolf Meyer Mental Health and Developmental Center in Decatur as a nurse and psychotherapist until her retirement. She was a member of Grace United Methodist Church and involved with St. Mary’s Hospital Medical Auxiliary, Muffley Elementary School PTA, Decatur Mental Health Center Volunteer, Decatur bowling teams, Beta Sigma Phi Sorority, and the Decatur Quilters Guild. She enjoyed quilting, reading, bird watching, fishing, and her pet dogs especially Daisy. She married Dr. Philip B. Burton June 25, 1955. They later divorced and he preceded her in death July 8, 2007,
She leaves behind her sons; David Burton and wife Peggy of Moweaqua, Illinois, Dennis Burton and wife Julie of Metamora, Illinois, and Douglas Burton and wife Karen of Wheatfield, Indiana, brother; Jim Prohaska and wife Nancy of Louisville, Kentucky, grandchildren; Michael Burton of Champaign, Mark and Sara Burton both of Moweaqua, John and Jeff Burton both of Wheatfield, Indiana, and Haily, Drew, Luke, Lexi, and Lance Burton all of Metamora, one niece, one nephew, and five great-nieces and nephews in Kentucky.
She was greeted in heaven by her parents.
