Gene Long's Obituary
Decatur- Gene “Yogi” Long, 86, of Decatur, passed away Monday, August 15, 2011 at home with his wife and family at his side.
A graveside service to celebrate the life of Gene will be held at 11:00 a.m. Friday, August 19, 2011 at Graceland Cemetery. Visitation will be from 5-7:00 p.m. Thursday, August 18, 2011 at Graceland/Fairlawn Funeral Home. Interment with Military Honors and “Flight Home” ceremony will be in Graceland Cemetery. Memorial contribution may be made to Macon County Animal Shelter, or DMH Hospice.
Gene was born July 11, 1925 in Plainview, Texas, the son of Bernie and Roberta Long. He proudly served his country in the US Navy during WWII aboard the U.S.S Sangamon. Gene worked as an Iron Worker for over 50 years and worked for Christy Foltz in Decatur for over 30 years. He was a life long member of V.F.W post 99 and Iron Workers Local 46. He married Shirley Carter in November of 1993 in New Mexico.
Gene is survived by his wife, step-children; Scott, Ruth, Bill, and Tom, four grandchildren, two great-grandchildren, niece; Peggy Laskin, and nephew; Hank Thomas.
He was preceded in death by his parents, three sisters and two brothers.
