Mavajean "Jean" Hupp's Obituary
Mavajean “Jean” Hupp, 89, of Decatur passed away on April 12, 2019 at Fair Havens Christian Village in Decatur. She was born January 6, 1930 in Decatur, the daughter of Lawrence and Rita Reeves Sowers. She married Paul Hupp on September 28, 1947 in Decatur. He survives.
Jean received high honors of Women of the Moose, where she was also a longtime volunteer. She began tap dancing during her childhood in Decatur, and continued to dance for many years. She was known as the “Dancing Granny,” which appeared on Facebook and went viral. Jean was also a member of the Modernaires singing group.
She is survived by three daughters, Paula Jean (Steven) Songer of Surprise, Arizona; Linda (Bob) Ducey of Decatur; and Marsha Renee Batie of Decatur; three grandchildren, Robb (Michele) Songer of Helmville, Montana; Travis (Morgan) Batie of Indiana; and Tanna Batie of Mt. Zion; and two great grandchildren. She is also survived by three step grandchildren, eight step great-grandchildren; and one step great-great-grandchild.
She is preceded in death by her parents.
Funeral services will be held Thursday afternoon at 1 p.m. at Graceland/Fairlawn Funeral Home in Decatur. Burial will follow at Graceland Cemetery. Visitation will be held Wednesday evening from 5 to 7 p.m. at the funeral home.
Memorial contributions may be made to the American Lung Association or the American Heart Association.
