Melvin E. Stevens' Obituary
Decatur – Melvin E. Stevens, 81, of Decatur, passed away at 2:27 am Thursday, May 14, 2009 at Fair Havens Christian Home.
Services to celebrate Melvin’s life will be held at 10:00 am Tuesday, May 19, 2009 at Graceland/Fairlawn Funeral Home with Chaplain Joe Harley officiating. Visitation will be held from 5-7 pm Monday at the funeral home. Interment with Military Honors will be held at Graceland Cemetery. Memorial contributions may be sent to the Homeward Bound Animal Shelter. Online condolences and memories may be shared with the family at www.gracelandfairlawn.com.
Melvin was born March 29, 1928 in Stewardson, IL, the son of Henry and Carrie (Bolt) Stevens. He married Mary Parish on April 17, 1975 in Decatur. Melvin proudly served his country for 22 years during WWII, the Korean Conflict, and the Vietnam War. He also served as a Macon County Deputy Sheriff for 20 years.
He leaves behind his wife: Mary, one son: Gary L. Stevens of Norfolk, VA, three step-sons: Jim (Mary Ann) Pollard of Decatur, Michael Bush of Tampa, FL, and Scott Bush of Ludwigschafe, Germany, one daughter: Carol Lentz of Decatur, two step-daughters: Holly (Scott) Stewart of Decatur, and Deonna (Mike) Bowman of Assumption, nine grandchildren, and four great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents, one brother: Maurice, and one sister: Marie.
The family would especially like to thank DMH, SIU Family Care, Fair Havens Christian Home, and Cancer Care Center for all the care and compassion they showed Melvin during his illness.
