Meredith Witt's Obituary
Meredith Witt, 71, of Decatur passed away on Thursday, April 16, 2015 in Decatur Memorial Hospital with her family at her side.
Meredith was born on July 4, 1943 in Terre Haute, IN the daughter of Ralph and Romaine (McCready) Swift Sr.
Sewing was an early passion for Meredith. A skill developed as a child, Mer would use her older brother Ralph’s old socks to make her first doll clothes; ultimately as a mother sewing for her children, extended family, friends, and grandchildren. Meredith’s craftiness could range from Raggedy Ann dolls and wedding dresses to kitchen pads or graduation suits. Raggedy Ann dolls started when her daughter Robin had lost the eyes to one of her dolls. Meredith created a whole new doll with a safer twist; she would paint the faces instead of using buttons. Her sewing had a practical side as well as a pleasing gift.
As an active mother in the 70’s, Meredith participated in PTA, Hess Park Baseball, and Decatur JFL. Meredith also associated with the neighborhood community by selling Avon, Tupperware, and assisting the boys on their paper routes.
Meredith’s other passion was keeping connected with the family through multiple media links which lead her to rediscovering relatives that she had not seen in many, many years. Through this online connection, Mer researched the various genealogy sites and family tree(s) and shared the family’s interconnected history with her children and grandchildren, ultimately, sewing the threads of our past to our future.
Surviving are her sons, Kevin Scheibly (Tina) of Decatur; Scott Scheibly of Warrensburg; daughter, Robin Binkley (Steve) of Decatur; seven immediate grandchildren, and one great-grandchild.
She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, George Witt Jr.; daughter Wanda Jo; brother, Ralph Swift Jr.; and sister Patricia Johnson.
Honoring Meredith’s wishes cremation will take place at Graceland/Fairlawn Crematory. There will be no public services.
The family of Meredith Witt is being served by Graceland/Fairlawn Funeral Home, 2091 N. Oakland Avenue, Decatur, IL. Send condolences to the family at www.gracelandfairlawn.com.
