In 1956 Pueblo Junior College competed in the National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) Basketball National Tournament, after finishing the 1955-56 season with a 24-7 record, and ended @ 6th in the nation. The team was led by Eugene Poston, who earned NJCAA Tournament Player of the Year honors despite playing for the sixth-place team. According to Gene's Hall of Fame Coach Harry Simmons (My late Father), "Gene was the single BEST all around player I ever coached." Depending on who you talked to, Eugene Poston might be the best basketball player to ever play in the national junior college tournament in Hutchinson (Kansas) where he was the event's most valuable player in 1956 despite playing on a sixth-place team. From the family of his Pueblo College coach Harry Simmons, Eugene's passing saddens us. Our father always say that Eugene was one of those "special" individuals that can be considered a "once-in-a-lifetime" player that a coach has the privilege of tutoring. He will always be remembered for his legendary play at Pueblo College where he led the Indians to two NJCAA tournament appearances in Hutchinson. I was so sorry to hear of Gene's passing. I worked with Gene when I was an apprentice Ironworker back in 78 and 79. He was very good to me and taught me how to weld and use a cutting torch. We built a "catwalk" over at the west plant (ADM). I live in Wyoming, now, but every time I come to Decatur and drive by that catwalk I think of the good weeks I was privileged to work with gene.
